Pratyusha Banerjee suicide: A curious case of 'Balika Vadhu', her boyfriend and the 'other' woman!

The perspective about Indian television underwent a major transformation in 2008 with the advent of a show based on the sensitive subject of marriage. Titled 'Balika Vadhu', the daily soap became an instant hit and was able to strike an emotional chord with the viewers—as the subject was a hard-hitting reality of our society. If Avika Gor played the young Anandi, it was Pratyusha Banerjee who played the grown-up character with as much élan and precision as the former did.

As Anandi, Pratyusha had won a million hearts and was a household name!

(For the uninitiated, Pratyusha quit the show midway at the height of her popularity to do something different as an actor and was replaced by Toral Rasputra to play Anandi.)

However, on April 1, 2016, news of Pratyusha's suicide rocked not just the showbiz fraternity but followers of Indian TV across the country. The minute the news broke, people initially thought it to be a hoax or an April fool prank.

It was hard to digest but Pratyusha had indeed ended her life.

Suddenly, the shock and grief was felt not just by her family members and close friends but also her fans were disheartened. What drew an even traumatic sketch of her suicide was the fact that Pratyusha’s body was found hanging from her Goregaon residence in Mumbai. An actress par excellence and a bundle of talent lay dead in her flat—all at the tender age of 24. How was it possible or why did she end her life? These questions and several others were boggling every sane person's mind (well, they still haunt many).

With her death, a man, who will always be better known as Pratyusha's boyfriend—Rahul Raj Singh - came into the picture. He first seemed like a guy who had lost the love of his life and was in acute stress and depression like state—cut to the allegations levelled by Pratyusha's friends and family that Rahul was behind the actress' death.

The case no longer remained what it looked like on the surface. Each and every layer of the revelation led to an even murkier detail making people wonder what really was going on between Rahul and Pratyusha.

Rahul was accused of allegedly abetting Pratyusha's suicide. He was arrested on the basis of a FIR filed by the late TV actress' mother Shoma Banerjee. She even said that he used to 'assault' her daughter.

Soon after he was taken into custody, a dramatic event took place where the lawyer following his case called it quits. Neeraj Gupta, who was Rahul's lawyer, reportedly claimed that his client concealed several crucial details, prompting him to listen to his conscience and leave the case.

Rahul got anticipatory bail from the Bombay High Court where Justice Mridula Bhatkar heard a three-and-half minute audio clip of the last telephonic conversation between Rahul and Pratyusha, an hour before she hanged herself at her suburban home on April 1. After which it was observed that there was no prima facie evidence to show that the accused "instigated or intended" the suicide, reports suggest.

Justice Bhatkar observed from witness statements, it was clear that harassment and disputes existed between them but there was nothing prima facie on record to show abetment.

The actress' boyfriend again got a reprieve from Supreme Court after it rejected the plea to cancel his bail. Pratyusha's parents, on the other hand, refuse to let go of their spirit in fighting for justice. They have sought re-investigation of their daughter's alleged suicide. From her last WhatsApp status to several phone call transcripts—each detail hints at a possible hidden jigsaw puzzle which awaits to be unfolded.

During the investigation, Pratyusha's personal life was in full public glare, getting judged every hour. What's ironic is the fact that just a few months prior to her untimely demise, she was seen sharing the screenspace with her boyfriend Rahul on a celebrity reality show 'Power Couple'.

None could possibly fathom that one fine morning, this young 24-year-old Balika Vadhu would not wake up to greet life. Several details from her personal life including the one where 'another woman' angle had been speculated a lot in the reports. Rahul's past had come calling and that too not in a pleasant way.

A television actress named Saloni Sharma has been put in the dock. Reason? She once reportedly dated the same, Rahul. Saloni was also allegedly accused of having some arguments with Pratyusha on-and-off and also 'hitting' her at the latter's residence which was shared by Rahul as well.

Saloni did break her silence and in an interview with TOI.com and was quoted as saying, “I was done with them and was trying to move on but it was my money (that she had given Rahul to run an event management firm) I was concerned about. Rahul wasn't paying me back... It made me angry and I landed there to ask for my dues. On seeing me, Pratyusha and Rahul both assaulted me and physically kicked me out of the flat. I was hysterical and refused to leave the premises. So they came down and that's when I hit them back out of utter humiliation”.

So, literally, there is a lot to be understood in this case which opened a can of worms as soon as it was reported. Each passing day saw a fresh detail unfolding itself.

Her parents are still fighting for justice demanding CBI investigation in the case, and have even written an application to the sessions court for the same. The curious case of Pratyusha's death continues to haunt us as the jigsaw puzzle leading to the culprit remains unsolved.

Mumbai: Kamya Punjabi had unveiled the teaser of a short film featuring late actress Pratyusha Banerjee on Monday. She plans to release the same on her friend’s first death anniversary (April 1). But Banerjee’s boyfriend - Rahul Raj Singh - has slammed Kamya by saying, “This is nothing but an attempt to make money in a dead person’s name”.

According to a report in DNA, Rahul claims that Pratyusha never shot for any short film. He has also called Kamya’s short film ‘bogus’.

“What film is she talking about? How and when did she shoot this film with Pratyusha? I’ve a record of all of Pratyusha’s activities in the months before I lost her. She was always with me. We went together to Ranchi for my brother’s child’s naming ceremony. Then we went to Goa. When did Pratyusha shoot this so-called film with Kamya?” DNA quoted Rahul as saying.

“This is nothing but an attempt to make money in a dead person’s name. How can this woman continue to use Pratyusha’s name to get publicity? Only I know what her thoughts and feelings were. She was planning a big birthday party for me when she was snatched away from me,” Rahul added.

For the uninitiated, Pratyusha, best known for essaying the role of Anandi in ‘Balika Vadhu’, reportedly ended her life by hanging herself on April 1 last year.

New Delhi: Actress Avika Gor says people often talk about her "romantic relationship" with her former "Sasural Simar Ka" co-star Manish Raisinghani, but she asserts they are just the "best of friends".

Apart from acting, the "Balika Vadhu" star enjoys going behind the camera.

"This (directing short films) started because of Manish's and my fans. Back then in 'Sasural...', there were no romantic scenes between me and Manish. Fans wanted us to see us together. So, we wrote a five-minute script and put it on YouTube. People really liked it.

"Manish was always into photography. I was also learning with him. It was interesting then we thought to do something from the heart, and then we started making films. Now, our film is travelling to different parts of the world," Avika told IANS.

They launched the poster of their short movie "Ankahee Baatein" at the 69th Cannes Film Festival's Short Film Corner last year.

But the news of the two dating kept popping up. Was she affected?

"Absolutely not. I was 13 when all of this (dating rumours) started. He was 32. So there was no point of even thinking about stupid stuff like this. Whenever those articles came, we laughed it off."

"Even now since we travel together, people talk, but it doesn't matter. We don't give any importance to the rumours. We are still best of friends. I don't have the time to be in a relationship right now," she added.

She is currently seen in the Colors show "Laado - Veerpur Ki Mardaani".

I understand Telugu well after working in the South: Avika Gor

$

Mumbai: Popular television actress Avika Gor, who tasted success in Hindi soaps, says that working in Telugu films regularly now lets her understand the language, so much so that she does not need a translator to understand her scripts.

The 'Balika Vadhu' famed child actress is now 22 years, and she has been acting in Telugu and Kannada films since 2013. Asked about how she copes with a film industry where the language is so different from Hindi, Avika told IANS: "I have been doing Telugu films for quite some times now and that is why I have started understanding the language. Now I get dialogues and narration in Telugu and I understand the language quite well. I do not need a translator now."

Starting her career in 2008, she has appeared in shows such "Sasural Simar Ka", "Laado: Veerpur Ki Mardani" and several non-fiction shows such as "Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa (season 5)", "Box Cricket League (season 2)", and "Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi 9".

Her prominent Telugu films include "Lakshmi Raave Maa Intiki", "Cinema Choopistha Mava", "Maanja", and "Ekkadiki Pothavu Chinnavada".

On why she is not appearing in any new non-fiction show, Avika said: "Since I am a youngster and fortunately have a strong fan-following, I want to be part of a story that entertains as well as offers a social message -- like ‘Balika Vadhu' and ‘Laado…'. It is the best way to engage people and create awareness."

However, she does not want to stay away from her fans, who love to see her on the small screen. That, she says, is a reason she keeps returning to the Colors TV show, "Khatra Khatra Khatra".

"It is a fun show and it features many of my favourite people including Bharti (Singh), Harsh (Limbachiyaa), Aditya (Narayan) and Gaurav (Dubey). I participate on a game show as ‘Khatra Khatra Khatra' because it lets me stay in touch with my TV audience," she said.

Playing Anandi in "Balika Vadhu" as a child star has had a "larger-than-life" impact. "People still identify me with that show and the character, so I have to choose my next TV assignment very wisely and not just for the sake of visibility," said the actress who travelled to the Attari-Wagah border and played games for the "Khatra Khatra Khatra" episodes with the Border Security Force (BSF) soldiers.

Balika Vadhu actress Avika Gor opens up on massive weight loss journey, says didn't like 'big arms, legs, a well-earned belly' - Pic inside

New Delhi: Television actress Avika Gor aka Anandi from popular daily soap 'Balika Vadhu' has opened up on her body weight issues. In a long Instagram post, Avika opened up on her massive weight loss transformation journey.

An excerpt from Avika Gor's post reads: I still remember one night last year, when I looked at myself in the mirror & I broke down. I didn't like what I saw. Big arms, legs, a well earned belly. I had let go too much. If it were due to an illness(Thyroid, PCOD, etc), it would be okay because that would be out of my control. But, it happened because I ate anything & everything, and I didn't workout at all. Our bodies deserve to be treated well, but I didn't respect it.

As a result, I disliked the way I looked so much that I couldn't even completely enjoy dancing (which I love) without thinking "how I must look right now". I got so busy judging myself & feeling bad that I didn't leave any scope for outsiders to make me feel bad.

As a result, I disliked the way I looked so much that I couldn't even completely enjoy dancing (which I love) without thinking "how I must look right now". I got so busy judging myself & feeling bad that I didn't leave any scope for outsiders to make me feel bad. Such insecurities run in the head all the time & they make us feel tired & irritated. Hence, I would often snap at my loved ones. Well, one fine day I decided that it was enough, and that I must evolve. Nothing changed overnight. I just started to focus on the right things... things that I should be proud of(like dancing). I kept trying to eat better & working out, and I had various setbacks. But, it was important that I didn't stop. And my people were constantly there to guide me. Long story short, I looked at myself in the mirror this morning & I didn't feel the need to look away. I smiled at myself, and told myself that I'm beautiful. And you, the person reading this, you are beautiful as well. We all have a lot to offer & we must actively work on that, rather than feeling sad about what we can't do. But, we MUST do what's in our control. Today, I am comfortable in my own skin. Today, I'm peaceful. And I hope you are too? Share your stories of self-love in the comments. Let's make self-love cool! - Love & Light Avika

Balika Vadhu actress Avika Gor refuses to endorse fairness creams, says 'there was a time I didn't like what I saw in the mirror'

New Delhi: Popular television turned movie star, Avika Gor hogged the limelight for playing Anandi in Balika Vadhu - a show based on child marriage. She earned her stardom with the show and slowly moved to regional movies. Recently, she refused to endorse beauty creams and hit back to headlines.

Avika Gor told Times of India, "Unfortunately we have been fed the wrong notion when it comes to the idea of an ideal beauty standard. Over the years we have seen so many advertisements where being fair is considered to be beautiful and I have never been comfortable with this idea. Being fair cannot be equivalent to your overall personality. Another reason why I refused to endorse these products is that I know that this kind of unrealistic approach towards the concept of beauty can have a lasting impression on young minds."

"As an actor, it was a conscious decision to not degrade anyone but to send out the right message. Being fair won’t make you confident and beautiful, but it’s your work ethics, your thinking, talent, and overall personality that matters the most as these will be your defining qualities", she added.

Avika Gor further added, "Beauty for me is all about being happy and comfortable in your skin. There was a time when I was doing great on the work front but I still doubted my talents and felt ugly. I didn’t like what I saw in the mirror. But the day I shifted my perspective, started taking care of my body, loving myself, eating right, and staying happy, that’s when the change happened. It also helped me a lot in my weight loss journey."

The 23-year-old actress has also worked in some South movies such as Uyyala Jampala, Cinema Choopistha Mava and Raju Gari Gadhi 3 amongst others. She made her Tollywood debut with Uyyala Jampala in 2013.

She even bagged a SIIMA Award for Best Female Debut (Telugu) at the 3rd South Indian International Movie Awards for her role in the film Uyyala Jampala.

Revisiting late actor Surekha Sikri's most notable on-screen performances

$

New Delhi: As the National Award-winning actor Surekha Sikri passed away on Friday, India lost an acting gem who gave audiences some of the most nuanced and passionate performances throughout her career spanning almost four decades.

Popularly known as ‘Dadisa’ in Indian households after her well-crafted role in the TV series ‘Balika Vadhu’, she was a film, theatre, and TV actor, who was born on April 19, 1945, in British India.

Hailing from Uttar Pradesh, Sikri spent most of her childhood in Almora and Nainital, and in 1971 graduated from the National School of Drama (NSD).

There she worked with the NSD Repertory Company for over a decade. She made her movie debut with the 1978 political drama film ‘Kissa Kursi Ka’ and later went on to play supporting roles in numerous Hindi and Malayalam films, as well as in Indian soap operas.

Her work in the critically acclaimed 1989 release ‘Salim Langde Pe Mat Ro’ and in Govind Nihalani’s ‘Tamas’, has been widely considered as her career’s best performances.

Some of her other well-appreciated films are ‘Zubeida’, ‘Mammo’, ‘Sardari Begum’, ‘Raincoat’ and ‘Mr and Mrs Iyer’.

She has also acted in many TV serials like ‘Banegi Apni Baat’, ‘Kesar’, ‘Saher’, ‘Samay’ among others.

The recipient of several awards, including three National Film Awards and a Filmfare Award, Sikri’s 2018 release ‘Badhaai Ho’, starring Ayushmaan Khurana, Neena Gupta, Gajraj Rao, and Sanya Malhotra also received immense appreciation and recognition from the viewers and critics for her.

As the nation bids final adieu to the actor, let's go down memory lane and commemorate the exemplary legacy of TV and cinema left behind by Sikri.

Tamas (1988)

The movie was based on Bhisham Sahni’s Sahitya Akademi award-winning novel of the same name and was set in Pakistan during India's partition in 1947. The film's plot focused on the difficulties faced by Sikh and Hindu exiles as a result of partition. Sikri starred in the film as Rajo, a role that earned her a National Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Mammo (1994)

Directed by Shyam Benegal, the ‘Muslim trilogy’ by the filmmaker began with ‘Mammo’ (1994), followed by ‘Sardari Begum’ (1996) and ‘Zubeidaa’ (2001). Sikri portrayed the role of Fayyazi, a grandmother to a 13-year-old Riyaz. Fareeda Jalal portrays a Pakistani woman who overcomes obstacles to reconcile with her family in India, including her sister (Sikri) and grandchild. The film got Sikri her second National Award.

Zubeidaa (2001)

Sikri once again reprised her role as Fayyazi in the film, which also starred Karisma Kapoor, Rekha, and Manoj Bajpayee. The protagonist here is also named Riyaz (Rajit Kapoor), who yearns to understand his mother, whom he never met since he was raised by his grandmother.

Balika Vadhu (2008- 2016)

Sikri’s portrayal of the family matriarch Kalyani Devi Singh, affectionately known as Daadisa in the television series `Balika Vadhu` was arguably one of her most memorable performances. The show was a coming-of-age story set in rural Rajasthan about a child bride and her transition to womanhood. Sikri won the Indian Telly Award for Best Actress in a Negative Role in 2008 for her performance in the show.

Badhaai Ho (2018)

Sikri`s performance in Amit Ravindernath Sharma`s `Badhaai Ho` propelled her into a social media sensation practically overnight. For the film, she reprised her role as a domineering matriarch, but one who is woke. Ayushmann Khurrana, Neena Gupta, Gajraj Rao, Shardul Rana, and Sanya Malhotra also acted in the film, which got Sikri her third National Award.

The actor, whose last screen appearance was in the Netflix anthology `Ghost Stories` (2020), died on Friday morning at the age of 75 following a cardiac arrest. While her demise has left the entire entertainment industry in a state of shock, her place will always feel like a void that will never be filled again.

Surekha Sikri wanted to act and had never-give-up attitude, recalls Sharad Kelkar

(Sharad Kelkar shared the screen with Surekha Sikri in the daily soap "Saat Phere: Saloni Ka Safar", which aired between 2005 and 2009. The actor opened up to IANS sharing his experience of working with the multiple National Award-winning late actress who, he feels was an institution of acting)

BY SHARAD KELKAR

Mumbai: "I have been lucky to work with Surekha ji in the initial days of my career. She treated me like her son and nurtured me in that show, from nuances to dialogues. Her persona was enough to get that. It's like the Dronacharya-Ekalavya kind of thing.

She was such a jolly person. We used to have a lot of fun on the set. I used to play a prank. She was short and slim. I would always come from behind and lift her and roam around the set. I have a lot of happy memories with her.

She was an institution of acting -- her eyes, voice, body language, everything. It's been an honour to work with such an actress. This was the only show where we shared the screen, but in those three years I've learnt a lot from her.

In that show, Nahar Singh (Sharad's character) and Bhabho (played by Sikri) shared a sweet bond. Most of my emotional scenes were with her. She taught me how to listen and feel the emotion. She was great while performing emotional scenes.

The best quality about her, which I loved, was that despite her age, she was up to work. She wanted to work, wanted to act and was extremely persistent. She had a never-give-up attitude. That was one thing I loved and it would be great if it comes to me, too.

She kept on working and excelling in her work. In spite of reaching that level, she still had the hunger to do more work and improve."
